About Auntie Bias

Welcome to “Dear Auntie Bias” a new advice column focusing on diversity and inclusion. Topics include gender, race, sexual orientation, class, ability and other "trigger" topics.  Trigger topics are often avoided because people don’t know how to address them and fear being ridiculed or shamed.  Although we don’t mean to offend others our actions often speak louder than our intentions. The pain and embarrassment that follows often keeps us silent, usually resulting in an even bigger problem.

“Dear Auntie Bias” is here to help by offering practical, compassionate advice and resources to navigate these challenging issues.

Who Is “Auntie Bias”?

As you have probably figured out the name “Auntie Bias” is a play on the term “anti-bias”. Also, “Aunts” are special people…like your mom but cooler! Whether warm and matronly or young and quirky, most of us have an aunt that we can go to for help without worrying about getting in trouble or being judged. Aunts not only give us advice, they usually help us feel better when things aren’t going well. Just think of  “Dear Auntie Bias” as your “cool” aunt!

Aside from that, Auntie Bias  is written by Lisa Adams, a coach and consultant  with 20 years of experience in the field of  diversity, equity and inclusion.

Why an advice column?

As a diversity consultant my clients are usually employers who want make sure they are being compliant with anti-discrimination laws and that employee conflict is kept to a minimum. While these are important goals they are not a complete approach to anti-bias work. After the trainings, participants often ask for advice on personal problems regarding race, gender, sexual orientation and other bias related issues. When it comes to anti-bias work there is a need to go beyond compliance with a more individualized approach.  “Dear Auntie Bias” will address personal issues regarding diversity and inclusion.
